The Diving Program began in 1993 with the completion of the Abell Hangar Pool and O'shaughnessy Olympic Diving Tower. Adding to COM's already rich aquatic history, COM divers have won more than 15 individual National Championship titles, had competitors on the Junior World Team, competed at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, and produced the 2005 U.S. Open Champion in the women's tower event. The COM Diving Team has quality programs and instruction for beginners all the way to Olympic hopefulls. Our mission is to not only produce great athletes but also to provide a positive experience for anyone who wishes to dive.
The COM Gym and Trampoline Program The Gym and Trampoline program began in 2007 with the addition of coach Amy Mann. Shortly after her brother Matt Koffel came aboard. Originally seen as an introduction to diving these programs have taken on life of their own and continue to grow. All divers go through rigorous training in this area, making COM's program extremely unique in this respect. Teams are beginning to form for a competitive purpose here as well, further adding to COM's history of excellence, now in and out of the water!
Our Staff
Head Coach: John Proctor John began his diving career relatively late, starting as a sophomore at St. Xavier High School in his hometown of Louisville, KY. From there he went on to compete for Auburn University in Auburn, AL. An injury cut his competitive career short, but, as luck would have it, the injury marked the beginning of his coaching career. He coached the age group program at Auburn for a short time before moving back to Kentucky where he coached the Ballard High School program for one season. From there it was on to Tucson and the University of Arizona, where under the guidance of long time friend and mentor Michele Mitchel (2 time Olympic Silver Medalist), John learned how to really coach. Since moving to Midland in 1999 John has proved his worth as both an age group and senior level coach, having brought many accolades back to Midland since his arrival. John and his family proudly call Midland home. Assistant Coach: Matt Koffel Matt arrived at COM in 2007. As an athlete Matt lettered in baseball, football, basketball, and golf. He also held a consistent top 10 national ranking in martial arts. At 18 he became a children's sports camp director at BASAC in Brandon, FL, also doubling the Suntwisters gym program from 100 to 250 athletes in two years. From there Matt went on to take a coaching position at the Parkettes National Gymnastics Training Center in Allentown, PA. In 2007 he coached 3 uneven bar state champions, 3 floor state champions, and 3 all around state champions, qualified 24 athletes (the entire team) to the level 4 state meet, and assisted with 24 national qualifiers (2006 as well). He was the head tumbling coach for 3 nationally ranked all star cheerleading squads and 5 nationally ranked high school cheerleading squads including 3 national champions. During his tenure at Parkettes he helped that program grow to numbers it had not seen in ten years. In 2008 Matt will travel to the Olympics in Beijing with a team of USA Gymnastics coaches to help shape training in the United States. Matt's goals here in Midland are to help make the gym and diving programs here among the best in the world.
Assistant Coach: Jennifer Mangum Jennifer Mangum seems to do it all. Along with coaching and teaching, Jennifer also continues to be a competitive springboard and platform diver, as well as maintaining a high level of activity with the Midland Community Theatre. A graduate of Texas Tech University, Jennifer is the Head High School Coach for both Midland and Lee High Schools, as well as an honors physics teacher. On a daily basis Jennifer is a staple to COM program.
